What can I say about these French copycats that I have not said already twice before ? You can almost smell the onions in this gallic mimicry.I'm A Loser - Marianne Faithful
What can I say about Marianne Faithful that has not been said before ? She could sing really well ! That has not been said before. And for good reason. Marianne was not desperately successful, making this song immeasurably more suited to her than its author.Baby's in Black - The Charles River Valley Boys
Though the prospect of blue grass warblings from Massachusetts does not enthrall, the reality is much, much better. The Boys' Beatles Country album is fabulous and this song sounds more authentic in their hands than it ever did in The Beatles'.
Rock and Roll Music - Chuck Berry
The original, of course, but it is thinner than the Beatles' sound and nowhere near as exciting.
I'll Follow The Sun - Glyn Johns
Unimaginative reproduction of this delightful ditty. Macca done it better !Mr. Moonlight - Dr Feelgood
When you consider all the tracks they could have chosen to pad out Beatles For Sale, this was an odd choice. Very dated, even then, and not at all the direction in which the band was heading. Anyway, here is the original, which is a bit quieter and maybe even a bit better than the cover.Kansas City/Hey, Hey, Hey - Little Richard
Again I present the original rocking classic. This has more swing than the Beatles' version, which sounds a bit too Butlins for my liking.
Eight Days A Week – M-Pact
This is another of those occapella numbers I claim not to like. Nice contemporary feel to it and a worthy interpretation of a fine tune.Words of Love – Buddy Holly
It’s back to 1958 for this original rendition and quite frankly it does sound it’s age a bit. Probably ground breaking in its day but it’s hard to hear it at this distance.
Honey Don't - Carl Perkins
We now know that John used to sing this one live, but Ringo did it on the record. Does this make us more enriched people ? No.
Every Little Thing - Yes
Curious. Why would a band like Yes take a little song like this and turn it into a six minute prog rock extravaganza ? And how did they manage to strip it of most of its joy in the process ? We may never know.
I Don’t Want to Spoil the Party – Rosanna Cash
Now this is altogether much better, a real country and western song from a real country and western starlet. Better still I first heard it whilst driving around California. Yee-hah.
What You’re Doing – Hub Kapp and the Wheels
The only known cover version of this unassuming number is by an imaginary band from Arizona ! It hails from a kids TV show from Phoenix called Wallace and Ladmo which was enormously popular… in Phoenix. And this is just about the only song that is a straight cover, rather than a spoof. It’s slightly on the boring side actually but what can you expect from an imaginary band ?Everybody’s Trying to be My Baby – Carl Perkins
The album ends with another dated classic from the later to be bespectacled Mr Perkins.
