Two Of Us - Aimee Mann & Michael Penn
You can't make a mess of this, can you ? It was just too good. And a male/female duet works perfectly.Dig A Pony - Screaming Headless Torsos
Because I am a crazy son of a gun, I have gone out of my way to include some live recordings on this album, so as to replicate the quasi-live feel of the Beatles' record. This is one such track. It is performed elegantly, and at length, by this violently titled band, though, to be honest, the song was never a favourite of mine.Across The Universe - Butter
Top quality Lennon material done rather well in my ever so humble opinion. Lots of electric guitars and drumming and altogether pleasing on the ears.I Me Mine - Marc Ford
Marc tries to give this the full rock opera workout, which the song doesn't quite justify, but it's a good enough tune and very enjoyable, even at this extended length.Dig It - Laibach
Laibach are an eastern European outfit who claim to have recorded a cover of the entire Let It Be album. In fact several of the tracks are unrecognisable from their Beatles' counterparts. Not this one though. You can tell this is Dig It. Though whether that is a good thing is open to debate. Lots of choices for this one, obviously. I have gone for this occapella gospel stylisation, which is good innocent fun. Sing it to me brothers !Maggie Mae - The Searchers
I am particularly pleased to have tracked down this song, of which only 30 seconds appears on the Beatles' album. I am made even more smug by the fact that this was recorded live in an empty club, in keeping with the Let It Be project. The song itself is decent enough, though it only becomes evident right at the end that it is the one from which the 30 seconds is taken.
I've Got A Feeling - Billy Preston
Billy Preston has a half claim to be the fifth Beatle, being involved in many of the Let It Be tracks. However, by that token the chap playing trumpet on Penny Lane and the girls singing on Across The Universe are also Beatles, so maybe Billy ought not to press his claims too far ! This is a surprisingly poor rendition of this fine McCartney tune. Is this grunge ? I've never been sure what that is, but this may be it. Then again, maybe it isn't.The Long and Winding Road - Aretha Franklin
Famous person doing famous song almost always means big disappointment. This is the exception which proves the rule, a phrase which is entirely devoid of meaning. In fact, this version is nearer the rule than the exception, as it isn't a patch on the original, but neither are any of the other numerous versions I possess. For You Blue - Eller Lynch
I read somewhere - on Amazon I think - that this was a really great bluesy version of this track, but it's not really. It's okay, but that's about all.Get Back - Ike and Tina Turner
Tina Turner is hardly likely to mess up too badly with this sort of material but in truth it doesn't chug along nearly as nicely as the original.
